Every Day 03:08
Every day it feels the same That’s what she used to say And one of us would stop to ask "Can you make that change?" Staring at an empty wall Like she’s done many times before Neither of us stop to ask "Can you fill that void?" And we say we are so trapped And we say we are boxed in Born out of place and out of time Bored half out of our minds Has all the colour drained away Or do we just tune into grey Did I hear somebody stop and ask "Can we make that change?" Is it time to make the call Or shall we wait a little more If we try to climb out of this hole There’s every chance we fall And we say we are so trapped And we yearn to be let free In another place, another time We can be bored half out of our minds Every day is something strange Every look that we exchange Every word and every touch We are not contained We know it’s not too late We’re only half bound by fate Every day it is the same

Strange lights are in the sky We take delight, don’t wonder why But something is not right Says the signal from the satellite Like a show put on just for us As hand in hand we walk the coast Lights so pretty, so we make a memory We listened to the breaking of the waves As we walked along the beach that night The sea, the air, the moon They were all in phase Something just felt very, very right Why would we clock what’s going on Two lovers both turned off their phones In a quiet spot to get away From the oh so busy day to day The big story for us tonight We read in each other’s eyes What’s there to worry When you hold me tight Oh the breaking of the waves The moon, the air, the sea Waves breaking By the time we rejoin the world It feels like it has turned Not just once around but upside down Those lights we saw in the sky Were not quite so benign Who knows what it’s gonna mean eventually We listened to the breaking of the waves As we walked along the beach back then The sea, the air, the moon They were all in phase Though something was very, very wrong We listened to the breaking of the waves As we walked along the beach that night The sea, the air, the moon They were all in phase And for us everything seemed right

Crash 04:02
Flood, fire, theft Wind cold rain Storm damage A hurricane Flood, fire, theft The crash has come It’s been and gone Been and gone And we Putting things back together Faster than they fall apart And we Stepping back from disaster Getting back on the path Did you know it was coming Did you see the warning signs Be prepared Don’t be scared Turn off the lights Don’t you pick fights Make sure the children are tucked in at night

Some kind of parasite Invades their brains It makes their conduct change In peculiar ways Contorted faces, disrupted breathing All kinds of bodily interweaving Some can shake off the effect After a little while Others reach some stable state Make a new version of their lives Gotta catch that nature show You know it’s playing on the free to stream Documenting the weirdness of Species humanity They can build cities And they build so many cars They even make space ships Though they don’t travel very far They’ve cured so many noxious diseases There’s food for all of them Though sometimes they’re mean with it But they don’t seem inclined To turn their amazing minds To free themselves from the impact of The parasite’s strange designs Gotta catch that nature show Such amazing photography Documenting the weirdness of Species humanity Some brains they are immune Those humans feel out of tune In some brains it only half takes Those humans can’t find a mate Gotta catch that nature show You know it’s playing on the free to stream All about the strangeness of Species humanity The soundtrack is great And I think I mentioned the photography How d’you get a gig on a show like that Guess it’s a who you know thing Documenting the weirdness of Species humanity

We crossed the water Going to visit your sister We crossed the water There was no drama Sea couldn’t have been much calmer The sun was shining Was it safe now We talked about it, was it Safe to cross the water And your eyes shone And you smiled bright And the days were long And the feelings were right We crossed a border Hoping our papers were in order As we crossed the border Some way to go now Already tired from the driving Long time before we’ll be sleeping And your eyes shone And you smiled bright And we made it to The other side We crossed the water Crossed the water We crossed the water

Old Friend 01:59
You gonna call on me You gonna call me later Gonna call attention to The aftertaste of the argument we didn’t have My old friend You gonna forget me Forget my birthday And the time we finished that bottle of whisky Oh our sore heads My old friend Are you going to bury me Or stand by and watch me burn When it’s my turn to step away I’ve a limited lifespan But a little way to go yet My old friend Already missing you You’ve not gone anywhere I took a roundabout route to nowhere Have we ended up so far apart Don’t start again with that stuck record You know it’s getting so tired My old friend

It was the third invasion of planet earth It didn’t get the coverage it deserved Oh no, oh no “We come in peace,” the headline said But the story was one hardly anyone read Oh no, oh no Can you get me to see A little differently Make the anger work for you And make it work for me She had a scream inside He said, “Can you let it out gently?” She says, “Ask me for improbable But don’t ask that of me.” Is it the umpteenth wonder of the world See how it dazzles those boys and those girls Oh yeah, oh yeah Like the breakthrough drug They’ve been dreaming of A second coming of mercy from above It’s a mattress lying on the floor In a box room of a friend from long before Oh yeah, long before Not much privacy but it’s sanctuary It’s what you’ve got Hope you don’t have to leave It’s not easy to see A little differently When the anger works for you It don’t always work for me She had a scream inside He said, “Can you let it out gently?” She says, “What you ask is possible, but it takes so much from me.” It was the last invasion of planet earth An invasion that was hardly worth the time Pay it no mind

about

Just after Christmas 2022, I took some time to prepare a few demos. Love Parasite, Breaking of the Waves, and Third Invasion were already linked thematically. And when performing these songs I’d sometimes joke about how they were going to appear on my forthcoming Space EP. But then Mike started asking when this EP was going to be recorded. So I thought, why not. As I began, I found I was drawn to making the songs full production numbers, rather than embellished versions of what I would do as a solo live performer. So I started to demo them like that. And then, as I worked on the demos, I realised that a bigger and more ambitious piece was calling out to be made.

I went back to an old and incomplete demo of Crash and pulled in two more recent songs to see what they would sound like in a sequence. It all seemed to work. Love Parasite went through some radically different arrangements – including a sort of 80s synth pop with bouncy arpeggiators – but finally settled into something like its present form. I wrote rough string parts and even rougher drum parts and added in some sound effects. I liked what I was hearing as did some generous early listeners. Then I approached Nick (www.haquinmusic.com), who had done great work with me on Rain, to see if he’d be up for helping make it real. He was. And it’s been a lot of fun lifting the songs from demo form into something that sounds like a proper record.
